Laziness and Procrastination

Have you felt on top of the world at one moment and then in a few weeks, you felt the slumps of life? You felt lazy and did not want to do anything. I’m not here to tell you that there is a magic pill that will get you to be productive 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Part of being human, with all our complexities is that we are constantly changing. Everything we feel and everything that we experience makes us who we are. The way to deal with the highs and lows is to go through it with an open mind and to learn from it.

There are times when I am at home and I don’t feel like washing the dishes, cooking food or cutting the grass in the backyard. I am aware of that and I take note that I am not doing what I need to do. Days pass and I see the results of my action. Dirty laundry piles up, there’s less room in the sink to wash your hands and spikey weeds grow in the lawn. There are things you have to do and you do them. Part of this realization can come from constant reminders from yourself, your peers giving you advice, a life event graduating from college or even a tragedy like a death of a family member.

When life hits, it will hit you hard and the way we deal with situations makes us who we are. We are then left with the choice to continue our path of laziness and procrastination or have a sense of urgency and take action.

What are you doing?

Are you content with where you work? Let’s flip a coin and find out. That’s because The Conference Board Job Satisfaction survey states that only about half of US workers are satisfied with where they’re working.

Let’s take a step back and figure this out. Your conversation may go like this. “I am stuck in my job and unhappy with my boss. I don’t feel independent and my job is demoralizing. I need to make a change. I can find a different job or create my own business. You know what, I will isolate myself and live off nature like the Bear Grylls.”

These options are bold, but too many times they are ignored like a boy throwing a temper tantrum then forgetting about why he lashed out in the first place. You feel the heat of the moment and do everything you can to change your situation. Two things happen. You burn yourself out by taking on so many activities or you wait so long that nothing happens and you become content with your situation. Then, the cycle repeats. Take a step back for a moment and think about it. Evaluate yourself and the situation that you are in.

Keep in mind that you can only control the events of the present. The past is already fixed and therefore unchanged. The future is always fleeting and never ceases to stand still. Once you think that you have a hold of the future, the present is already here. So, create your present, your now. Don’t wait for the future and don’t dwell in the past.

You can do anything you put your mind to. This is not mere words, but something to live by. Think about what you want to do and take action in the present. It looks simple, but it takes time and effort to develop any skill. There will be slumps and times when we feel like we’ve taken three steps back, but our satisfaction will come with the results that we have produced and the lessons we learned.
